History of TTT

Torquay Theatre Troupe began its journey in 2001, gathering in the warmth of local homes to share play readings and engaging discussions. This intimate beginning laid the foundation for a community built on a shared love of live theatre, which has flourished for a quarter of a century.

For nearly two decades, the Troupe made the Torquay Senior Citizens’ Hall our home, creating memorable performances and fostering a sense of community. After 15 years of passionate advocacy, our dream of having a dedicated arts space took shape when we led efforts to transform the old basketball court at the recreation centre into a vibrant performance and visual arts hub, eventually known as the Shoestring Playhouse.

Throughout our 20-year history, we proudly staged full-length and one-act plays three times a year, captivating audiences and nurturing local talent. We didn’t just stop there; we were instrumental in the planning and development of both Shoestring Playhouse and ‘The MAC’ (Multi Arts Centre), ensuring a lasting legacy for the arts in our community.

In March 2021, we embraced a new chapter by taking over the management of Shoestring Playhouse, further enhancing its functionality and accessibility. This dedication to skill development also led us to organize Stage Management and Lighting Workshops in 2023, as well as collaborate with Improvisation Melbourne for lively improv sessions.

Today, we are proud to serve as the operational management group for Shoestring Playhouse, a cherished public venue that hosts a diverse array of events. From dance performances and youth theatre productions to acting classes, music nights, and arts-related expos, we strive to create a welcoming space for all.

As we look forward to the future, we want to share that Shoestring Playhouse will be closing from late October 2024 until approximately July 2025 for exciting renovations. These improvements, made possible through funding from the State Government Roads and Infrastructure body, will include an upgraded heating and cooling system, a soundproof wall to enhance acoustics, improved restroom facilities, and more. We can’t wait to welcome you back to an even better Shoestring Playhouse!
